Summer nights

The days here in the south are unbearable.  If you dare to step outside you run the chance of 1) heat stroke or 2) taking your last breath because of the humidity.  Believe me, you don't want a summer day to fly by.  As a child, with each passing day you knew the start to school was inevitable.  I guess as an adult I fear it now too...in a different kind of way...just knowing this is my last summer.  I want to soak it in.  Rising at noon, sprinklers, lemonade, poolside, fresh fruit, barbecues, later bed time, sweat, hushpuppies, snow cones, the ice cream man, sunsets, painting, relaxing, fresh veggies, shorts, sweet tea, sunflowers, catfish, bikinis, the beach (ones BP forgot to destroy), seafood, mosquito bites, chalk, s'mores, honeysuckle, friends, laughter.  I love it all.
But as the sun heads West, the temperature goes down.  The grill fires up.  We sit outside.  The sky turns every shade of pink, orange, and gold.  A majestic scene for all to see.  As we eat, the sky begins to twinkle.  First, with lightning bugs and then with starts.  When the moon is high its time for bed.  As we lie down to slumber the familiar sound of cicadas lull us to sleep.  No thoughts fill our heads.  How could we worry on days like these?  We drift off in our prayers...everyone at peace.
